Depending on the size of the vacant position you can take the following steps:
- If there is a substantial position available (e.g. 50+ hours per fortnight), it is best to fill this vacancy by recruiting new staff. In some situations you may wish to recruit internally (an existing staff member working in a smaller position).
- For smaller positions (e.g. 3-40 hours p/f) you can consider offering the vacant hours to an existing staff member to create a larger role. Otherwise, recruit to the position.
Note: Do not break up the vacant positions and allocate small portions of the vacant hours to existing staff. This practice often leads to the retention of very small positions which are difficult to fill.
